Drumming, instrumental, and vocal music are represented here; astonishing in its variety, and often overpowering in its emotional strength, the music celebrates a whole way of life - cattle, warriors, elders, hunting and raiding, weddings, funerals and children who cannot sleep.

From the amazing archives of recordings by Hugh Tracey, this issue features the lesser known Kanyok people & their Luba neighbours in the 50's. Most of it recorded in the townships of the copper mines in Katanga, with a more urbanised music as a result.

Griots have always held an important place in Mauritanian society, standing as it does at the crossroads of the Arabo-Berber civilizations and Black Africa. In olden times they used to sing epic poems on the exploits of the noble families, and their presence is still vital for the success of any feast. They are valued musicians, improvisers, entertainers and clowns, but men fear the freedom of their speech.

As recorded in Southern Congo & Northern Zambia between 1950 & 1958. The Katanga guitar style in Congo originated in the Likembe tradition, the sound from Zambian coppermine towns was heavily influenced by American music heard on the radio.

This CD is a selection of a capella performances. Here more than 600 Chagga men and women chant on the southern slopes of MT Meru, at least 100 hundred Gogo sing timeless praise songs, there are humourous songs from the Nyamwezi community in Dar-es Salaam, lyrical wigasha dance songs by the Shukuma and the unmistakable Massai chanting to go along with their jump dances.

Played and sung by Dumisani Abraham Maraire with Nkosana Arthur Maraire, voice and hosho sukutai Laura Chiora. Much of the instrumental and vocal music of East Africa has been described as repetitive and monotonous; apologists counter that the music is quite varied and exacting. Essentially, repetition and uniformity are regarded as aesthetic strenghs in Africa rather then a structural weakness.
