New in store
Subtitle - Nerves of Ice
New album by Giovanni Marks, as before a radical approach and varied ways of working, there's even (what sounds like) a Joy Division rip-off (My Baby don't love me no more) and some pop music plunderphonics, but the praxis remains of hyper-energetic ranting, personal documents in the form of poetic cascades. All this in musical structures that stab you in a monomaniac way, while at the same time they really get you moving.

Robert Ashley - Foreign Experiences
Travelling in from different planets, Ashley and the world's rappers agree to aestheticise logorrhoea, shock-jockery and loose language and to keep those texts a-coming (there are 84pp in the accompanying libretto book). Two speakers and a host of ghost voices and a synthesised 'orchestra', all hovering around single tones create a hypnotic, often funny, vicious, strangely gripping linear streams of sound/speech. The nuance is all in shadows and hints and fleeting references. No one else is doing anything like this and it's fascinating to see Ashley re-emerge with such a highly evolved, unplaceable but fascinating form pitched somewhere outside opera, rap, theatre, music and bar talk.' Robert Ashley - Yellow Man with Heart with Wings
1990 CD issue of this 1978 piece for voice and electronics. The electronics (with additional Clavinet by 'Blue' Gene Tyranny) start out shimmering and subtle, slowing building up in strange, menacing fashion. The first part is in Spanish (with Guillermo Grenier providing the voice); the second part is 'in English' (heavily processed vocals by Ashley) and quite radical -- easy to imagine this one sitting very high in a United Dairies-like universe.

Robert Ashley - Automatic Writing
Three of Ashley's landmark recordings, Automatic Writing (1979), Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon (1971) and She Was A Visitor (1967). Composed in recorded form over a period of five years, Automatic Writing is the result of Robert Ashley's fascination with involuntary speech. He has recorded and analyzed the repeated lines of his own mantra and extracted four musical characters. The result is quiet, mysterious, melancholy and an early form of ambient music. Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon, and She Was a Visitor are excerpts from an opera entitled That Morning Thing that was composed in 1966-67.

Robert Barry - Otherwise
In 1981 the Van Abbe Museum for modern art in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, published two 'art records' on vinyl. This one by US conceptual artist Robert Barry is a spoken word recording with very few words, let's say something like 30 words, spread over 2 sides?? That's all. No idea what the concept was here.

Konrad Bayer - Der Sechste Sinn
"This audio document of three readings from the years 1962 to 1964 proves to be just the intensity of the lecture as a rare jewel that reminds strongly of the old ties between poetry and music. These performances also offer previously unpublished passages of a 'novel', the with his wit and his immense destructive force against the conventions of art and life can unsettle even today." (skug - Journal für Musik, Wien) (skug - Journal of Music, Vienna).

Far-out audio collage,  mostly spoken word (German language), from private home recordings from the 1960s. The tapes were partly found in flea markets, partly given to him by friends. The collage (almost 50 minutes) was broadcast by DeutschlandRadio-Berlin in 1998. Beautiful artwork.
