Daphne Oram - Oramics
She was one of the founding members of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1957, and a true pioneer in electronic music. This amazing double disc charts her post-BBC work in her own studio in Kent. Her Oramics invention consisted of drawing onto a set of ten sprocketed synchronised strips of 35mm film which covered a series of photo-electric cells that in turn generated an electrical charge to control the sound fequency, timbre, amplitude and duration. The attraction of this technique was a direct relation of a graphic image to the audio signal and even though the system was monophonic the control over the nuances of sound production was very flexible. Daphne Oram continued to use the process throughout the sixties producing work for film and theatre including; 'Rockets in Ursa Major' (1962), 'Hamlet' (1963) and 'Purple Dust' (1964).

John Oswald - Plunderphonics
In 1987 Oswald made the EP Plunderphonics, which comprised four 'revised performances' created by the 'plundering' (ie, studio manipulation) of recordings by Count Basie, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, and of The Rite of Spring. A CD of Plunderphonics followed in 1989, with an additional 20 plundered performances by the Beatles, Glenn Gould, Michael Jackson, Liszt, Webern, Verdi, and Beethoven. Although Oswald's sources were scrupulously acknowledged and the recordings given free of charge to musicians, critics, libraries, etc, the CD nevertheless was deemed to be in violation of Canadian copyright laws. Under the threat of legal action Oswald relinquished the master tapes and all remaining copies were destroyed. Ironically, Oswald was subsequently commissioned by the US label Elektra to plunder its catalogue and prepared the CD Rub?iy?t Plunderphonics (Elektra PRCD-8247, issued in 1991) to mark the company's 40th anniversary! This 2CD edition we have here is from 2001. 60 tracks including all 25 tracks from the banned Plunderphonic CD. Plus a 44-page, handbound, hardcover book, featuring an interview with Oswald who discusses the process and the cultural and historical context of the tracks, plus many of his own full-colour photo-collage images.
