In 1984, prior to his founding of proto-metal armageddon unit Zeni Geva, Kazuyuki K. Null forged, along with Seijiro Murayama (the original drummer for Keiji Haino’s peerless Fushitsuha), the ungodly alliance of Absolut Null Punkt (ANP). After a 15-year hiatus, the duo decided to play together once again, a decision culminating in a series of performances in their native Japan and, more recently, several shows in parts of mainland Europe. This self-titled release on the US-based, Important Records, is a document of performances taken from both Tokyo and Osaka. As you would expect from two veterans of the Japanese noise community, Null and Murayama concoct a visceral brew of pulverizing free rock improvisation and Merzbow-style white noise power electronics.

Lee Ranaldo, Christian Marclay, Günter Müller and David Watson. What a company! Most of these people don't need further explanation, maybe just say that David Watson from New Zealand plays bagpipes and guitar, and that Swiss musician Günter Müller's subtle, spare, and meditative playing turns sound into liquid textures. Three sides of bubbling audio biosphere and a fourth-side etching by Lee Ranaldo, made specially for the project. Recorded in the Echo Canyon Studio on Murray Street in downtown New York, mixed and edited by Jim O’Rourke. The sleeve is brilliant, by the way, with exclusive art work by Leah Singer.

George Antheil's reputation as the Bad Boy of Music (the title of his fascinating autobiography) was earned largely with his Ballet Mécanique, written to accompany an abstract silent film by the artist Fernand Leger. It was composed for player pianos and percussion, with harsh, driving rhythms, and it caused the kind of riots in Paris that were useful to a composer's reputation. Today, that reputation may keep Antheil from being taken seriously. But when you hear the Ballet (as rescored in 1953 for an early mono recording) today, it's a substantial and exciting piece of music, formally tight and not at all hard on 21st century ears. The remainder of this program shows more of Antheil's range. The Serenade is a lovely piece of Americana, with a particularly touching slow movement. The Symphony and Concert owe much to Stravinsky's "neoclassical" style; both hold up very well.

This CD presents the version of the piece from 1924, a kind of expanded version with 3 xylophones, 4 bass drums, tamtam, 2 pianos, siren, 3 airplane propellors, 7 bells, and 16 synchronized player pianos. It was never performed until its premiere, produced by Paul Lehrman, at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in November 1999. Also on the CD: John Cage and Lou Harrison's 'Double Music' (1941), (for percussion quartet); Richard Grayson's 'Shoot the Piano Player' (1995), (for player piano and electronics), and 'Mister 528' (1996), (for multiple player pianos and electronics); Amadeo Roldán's 'Ritmica No. 5' (1930) and 'Ritmica No. 6' (1930),( for percussion ensemble); and Felix Mendelssohn's 'Saltarello-Presto from Symphony No. 4', arranged by Paul Lehrman (for 16 player pianos).

The nine tracks on Visions of Doing have been selected from Pierre Bastien's soundtracks to Karel Doing's films. Pierre Bastien on Visions of Doing: "The compositions presented here in homage to Karel Doing are more than just the soundtracks to his films. They are the result of years of collaboration, in the recording studio and in live performances. Tracks like Visions of Shanghai, Energy Energy and Turkish Boys at the Harbour have Karel's sounds integrated within the compositions. Others like Bubblin' or The Thermodynamic Orchestra served as inspiration for Karel's to development of his Optical Toys. As we worked together at Studio Een on three performances (Recollection, Four Eyes, and Rotary Factory) and a CD-ROM (Nine Optical Toys) we developed a strong complementary style evident in the music I composed for Karel's films: Energy Energy, Images of a Moving City, East and Getijden. The extract of Four Eyes included here shows how our images and sounds criss-cross and lead to a collective piece."

Scored for multiple guitars and percussion, the symphony is divided into five movements and features Z'ev, a unique percussionist whose banging instruments strangely complement the music. Symphony No. 2 is highly dramatic and never ceases to impress upon the listener that Branca is serious about what he is doing.

Through three long tracks, each titled for a common spice found in curry, Courtis thoroughly explores the aural limits of a stringless (and judging from the digipack photos, rather broken) hollow-body guitar. Processing is employed throughout, resulting in far more than percussive noises– Courtis finds waterfalls of humming and squealing, carnival organs, windchimes, and blown-glass swan calls within this tortured axe.

note: slightly damaged cover. Barcelona meetz Lyon for some waltz-time ping-pong in zero gravity! This one's been so long in the waiting that the band stabbed their copies to death with their ritual umbrellas, having completely forgotten about the project and assuming it was the work of space aliens or freemasons. Nuevo-classique Klimperei featuring a pack of post-punctual pranksters and their thieving girlfriends!
