Edited by Rob Young, this presents a selection of 19 'Primers', a series that has been running since 1996 in the WIRE magazine. The Primer is an extensive article written by an expert to introduce people to certain figureheads or genres of new music from all kind of categories, with a biography and a list of essential albums by that artist or group. Illustrated by the incomparable Savage Pencil aka Edwin Pouncey, this is really an example of the level of writing and knowledge in the WIRE. So get primed for Captain Beefheart, Iannis Xenakis, The Fall, Noise, No Wave, Tropicalia, AMM, Fela Kuti, Dubstep, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Stockhausen, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Musique Concrete - well.. you know what the WIRE people go for! Several Primers have been expanded and updated and 3 new ones added: Nick Cain on
noise, Edwin Pouncey on Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention, and
Philip Clark on improv guitarist Derek Bailey. 200 pages, paperback.

In 1984, prior to his founding of proto-metal armageddon unit Zeni Geva, Kazuyuki K. Null forged, along with Seijiro Murayama (the original drummer for Keiji Haino’s peerless Fushitsuha), the ungodly alliance of Absolut Null Punkt (ANP). After a 15-year hiatus, the duo decided to play together once again, a decision culminating in a series of performances in their native Japan and, more recently, several shows in parts of mainland Europe. This self-titled release on the US-based, Important Records, is a document of performances taken from both Tokyo and Osaka. As you would expect from two veterans of the Japanese noise community, Null and Murayama concoct a visceral brew of pulverizing free rock improvisation and Merzbow-style white noise power electronics.

. . .one track long electric piece. High frequencies tones lies over an hour until the sudden end comes unexpectedly. . . . This CD is not soundscape or sound art stuff, though there's something here unconsciously comes down to deep thoughts.'

Have we turned into a branch of Asano Music Production? No, but for him it was all or nothing, so here we are. We quoted a lot of his own remarks on the CDs, just because most of it is sheer poetry . . . More info on: www.kojiasano.com

Japanese composer & performer residing in Barcelona, goes his own way with feedback, computers & electronics, but also an unorthodox approach to classical instrumentation. His extensive catalogue shows a consistency & ambition quite distinguished & rare.

Inspired by an image of a boat trip around the north pole, going through ice fields of many layers. Electronic editing & processing of sound files, re-produced & calculated many times to create 'layers of different temperature'.
